Grief, Loss, Memories: One Day at a Time

One dies, one is left
behind, the nature of things.
Grief, loss, memories.

Sad, depressed, confused.
Old man misses his woman,
Stays in bed all day.

He knows it is not
healthy, that he must move on.
Grief, loss, overwhelms.

He says over and
over, it should have been him.
He should have gone first.

It’s not fair, he cries.
Life will never be the same.
His heart is empty.

Cheer up, they tell him.
Her words ring in his ears. No
pity parties here.

Life goes on, time to
make a new life for himself.
Grief, loss, memories.

Go to the movies.
Volunteer at the gardens.
Work at the book shop.

Starting over, so
hard for an old man like him.
She would want him to.

Tries new things, ventures
out beyond his comfort zone.
One day at a time.
